‘Wicked’ takes audiences many years back in Munchkinland, long before Dorothy came in the picture. Back then, the spotlight shone on two girls – the blonde and popular Glinda and the feisty, outspoken and emerald-skinned Elphaba. Their rivalry-fueled friendship is deeply rooted from their younger years; with Glinda’s popularity and innate charms bringing Elphaba’s striking differences against her to the surface, causing the latter to be a social outcast. And the opposite paths they took as they realized their destinies as the two witches of Oz is a testament to their unending rivalry, one that gives rise to “the most complete – and completely satisfying—new musical in a long time”, as USA Today puts it.
